Ostgoths appear on the territory of the Roman Empire in V century, when under pressure of the Huns they cross the Danube river. Because of the favorable strategic position, king Theodorich the Great chooses Novae to be his residence and the capital of the Kingdom of the Goths in period 476 to 488 A.D.

The Fortress Kaleto and the Vicissitudes of Time

On a hill satiated almost in the center of the town of Svishtov, there is a fortress. Its ruins rise on a strategic site, affording a beautiful view to the east, west and north.  According to some Ottoman chronicles in 1641 the fortress was conquered by a voivode from Walachia Vlad Cepes, famous for his radical approach to the Ottoman sovereigns and his devotion to exotic rituals.

Svishtov - possession of the sultana and center of Bulgarian Revival

Later on, western historians register the fact that at that time Svishtov had special statutes possession of the sultana, which brings certain privileges to the town. This was a period of great cultural and economic bloom for the town, as it was the gate of the Ottoman Empire to the west, serving the commercial and cultural relations of the country (then situated on three continents) with the European countries.
